What is ICES and a Day of Sharing???

ICES

ICES is an abbreviation for International Cake Exploration Societe (visit their website at www.ices.org), which is an international group consisting of over 4000 members.  Our chapter in Michigan is a group of around 150 members consisting of cake decorators, cake enthusiasts, or some who simply enjoy the friendships formed within the group!  Our members vary from non-decorators to occasional decorators to home bakers to bakery owners.  We discriminate against no one, and welcome every one!

Within our state, we have 2 meetings annually, which are called Days of Sharing.  In the spring, we normally meet in Lansing, and in the fall will generally travel to other areas of the state.  We also host the Great Lakes Mini-Classes event, which we plan to offer every 2 years.  We also occasionally offer special events, such as a Ladies Tea, or a Hands On Workshop, for example.  Be sure to check our Upcoming Events page often for new events.

We also have a state newsletter that is sent to our membership 4 times a year.  In this newsletter, you will find information on upcoming events our group is hosting, as well as other sugar related events of interest to our members.  Along with events, we also have various articles on varieties of decorating techniques, or perhaps about an interesting event one of our members may have attended, or perhaps a recipe or two we’d like to share.

Day of Sharing (DOS)

A Day of Sharing event is just that… sharing!  We have 2 of these each year, one in the spring and another in the fall.  Our Day of Sharing event is actually 2 days… we begin on Saturday evening, and finish up Sunday afternoon after our fun filled auction (where you can purchase “mystery gifts” or participate in our Chinese Auction for all sorts of cake supplies).  During the event, you can expect to see several demonstrations (sometimes they will even be hands on!) on a variety of sugar art methods.

Saturday evenings activities begin at 6pm, and Sunday comes to a finish around 4pm normally.  We normally hold the event at a hotel since we typically have 80+ members in attendance, or if not, we are always very close to a hotel.   We are currently extremely fortunate to have a member in the state whose husband generously offers to provide video service’s at our events so there is never a problem viewing our demonstrations!

Examples of previous demonstrations include buttercream icing techniques, gum paste flower creations, gingerbread idea’s, decorating wedding cake tables, marzipan molding, and more!!!  We try to mix up the offerings at each Day of Sharing with some basic skills as well as advanced skills so there’s always something for everyone.

If any of our members have a request for a demo, or would like to do a demo, we encourage input and sharing!  You may always contact our state rep and discuss your idea’s or suggestions.
